Canada’s foreign minister has revealed a new set of sanctions against the Russian government as a response to the recent passing of Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny and Russia’s ongoing severe and organized human rights violations. Melanie Joly made the announcement through an early Sunday statement, specifying that the sanctions will apply to six high-ranking Russian officials involved in Navalny’s mistreatment, severe punishment, and subsequent demise. Navalny, aged 47, was widely considered to be the primary political challenger of Russian President Vladimir Putin. While visiting Ukraine in the prior month, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused Putin of being directly linked to Navalny’s passing in the Arctic prison camp where he was serving a lengthy sentence. The Kremlin has dismissed accusations of Putin’s involvement in Navalny’s death as groundless and disrespectful. Joly stressed the necessity for Russia to conduct an open and comprehensive investigation into Navalny’s demise, referring to him as a beacon of hope for the Russian populace and a steadfast advocate for freedom, justice, democracy, and a brighter future for the country. Canada previously announced sanctions on February 23 against an additional 10 Russian officials and businessmen, along with 153 entities, in collaboration with the US and the UK.
