The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre has issued a warning about a fraudulent scheme involving text messages that purportedly come from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). According to reports, these text messages contain the recipient’s name and personal information, including their social insurance number, and claim that there is an outstanding payment that needs to be made to a provided phone number.

Jeff Horncastle, a planning communications outreach officer at the anti-fraud centre, highlighted the seriousness of this scam, noting that fraudsters are taking advantage of individuals who may have been affected by previous data breaches. By using stolen personal information, scammers attempt to deceive victims into sending them money. Horncastle emphasized the importance of taking proactive measures to protect oneself from identity fraud, particularly for those who have been victims of identity theft in the past.

It’s crucial to remember that the CRA would never request payment or sensitive information via text message. Horncastle advised recipients of suspicious messages to verify the authenticity of the communication by independently looking up the official phone number of the Canada Revenue Agency and contacting them directly before taking any action that could compromise their personal data or devices.
