Freestyle skier Charlie Beatty and curler Chloe Fediuk were announced as the Canadian flag-bearers for the Winter Youth Olympic Games opening ceremony in Gangwon, South Korea, as per the Canadian Olympic Committee. The selection committee, which included chef de mission Lisa Weagle, chose Beatty, aged 16, and Fediuk, aged 17, not only for their remarkable athletic achievements, but also for their leadership qualities, character, and love for sports. Beatty, hailing from Horseshoe Valley, Ont., holds the title of junior world champion in men’s ski slopestyle, while Fediuk, from Edmonton, helped her team secure silver at the world junior-B curling championships, thereby helping Canada qualify for the 2024 world junior playdowns in Finland. The opening ceremony will take place on Friday at the Gangneung Oval, and the Winter Youth Olympic Games, catering to high-performance athletes aged 14-18, will run until Feb. 1. Daily coverage will be streamed live on CBC Sports.
