The Canadian government is lengthening a program that supports 400 local journalism roles nationwide. Minister of Heritage Pascale St-Onge has announced that Ottawa will allocate an additional $58.8 million to sustain the Local Journalism Initiative until 2027. This initiative, launched in 2019, aids news outlets in hiring journalists focused on local reporting. The government highlights that these journalists play a critical role in covering marginalized communities, such as Indigenous, official language minority, and LGBTQ+ groups. To safeguard press freedom, the funding is channeled through non-profit organizations. The Canadian Press collaborates with News Media Canada under this initiative, providing editorial assistance and technical support. Although CP is not a direct recipient of LJI grants, it contributes to the review process of grant applications overseen by News Media Canada.
