A prosecutor who was investigating a violent attack on a public television channel last week was fatally shot in Guayaquil on Wednesday, according to Attorney General Diana Salazar.

César Suárez, the prosecutor in question who had previously conducted high-profile investigations, was shot while driving his vehicle.

Following the assault at TC Television, which was broadcasted live, thirteen individuals believed to be involved have been arrested. President Daniel Noboa described the incident as a reflection of an “internal armed conflict” in Ecuador, with a surge in killings and other crimes related to drug trafficking.

As a result, Noboa has declared a state of emergency, along with a nighttime curfew, and designated 22 criminal groups as terrorist organizations.

Suárez was also handling the Metastasis case, which involves allegations of preferential treatment for an Ecuadorian drug lord by judges, prosecutors, police officers, and high-ranking officials.

The Ecuadorian police are actively working to identify the individuals responsible for Suárez’s murder.

The country has recently experienced a series of attacks, including the abduction of several police officers, following the apparent escape of a notorious gang leader from prison.

José Adolfo Macías Villamar, the leader of Los Choneros gang – responsible for a wave of car bombings, kidnappings, and murders in Ecuador, was found to be missing from his prison cell. He was serving a sentence for drug trafficking.

The government responded to his disappearance by declaring a state of emergency and deploying the military to prisons. This action triggered a wave of at least 30 attacks across the country, including the assault on the television station in Guayaquil.
